About the tour

Þórsmörk Super Jeep Tour – 2 Days of Adventure in Iceland’s Highlands

Join our Þórsmörk Super Jeep Tour – 2 days and explore one of Iceland’s most spectacular valleys. This two-day adventure takes you deep into the Highlands, where glaciers, volcanoes, and lush green landscapes meet.

Located between three powerful glaciers — Eyjafjallajökull, Mýrdalsjökull, and Tindfjallajökull — Þórsmörk offers scenery unlike anywhere else in Iceland. Because of this unique location, the valley features dramatic mountain ridges, glacier rivers, and sheltered forests.

Travel takes place in a specially modified Super Jeep, built for Iceland’s rugged mountain roads. These powerful vehicles can safely cross glacial rivers and rough Highland tracks. As a result, remote parts of the valley become accessible.

Throughout the journey, your guide shares stories about the volcanic forces that shaped the landscape. In addition, several stops allow time to explore the scenery and enjoy short hikes.

Discover the Magic of Þórsmörk Valley

Few places in Iceland feel as wild and beautiful as Þórsmörk. Towering mountains surround the valley while glacial rivers wind through the terrain below.

Surprisingly, the valley itself is rich with vegetation. Moss, ferns, and birch forests grow between volcanic hills and rocky ridges. Because of this contrast, the scenery feels both dramatic and peaceful.

Numerous hiking trails begin directly in the area. Some paths lead to breathtaking viewpoints, while others guide visitors through forests, canyons, and hidden waterfalls.

For many Icelanders, Þórsmörk holds a special place in their hearts. Once you arrive, it quickly becomes clear why this valley is so beloved.

Overnight in the Heart of the Highlands

An overnight stay makes this Þórsmörk Super Jeep Tour – 2 days especially memorable. Instead of leaving in the afternoon, guests remain in the valley after most visitors have gone.

Accommodation is provided in a comfortable mountain hut surrounded by nature. After a day of exploration, travelers can relax and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere.

Later in the evening, everyone gathers for a traditional mountain BBQ dinner. Soft evening light often settles over the surrounding mountains, creating a magical Highland setting.

Because of the quiet surroundings, many visitors consider this moment one of the highlights of the tour.

Day 1 – From Your Accommodation to Þórsmörk

Morning Pickup and Scenic Drive

Your adventure begins with a morning pickup at your accommodation. From there, the journey continues east along Iceland’s spectacular south coast. Gradually, the landscape becomes wilder as the road approaches the Highlands.

Soon, the route turns onto F-road 249, one of Iceland’s most exciting mountain roads. Along the way, your guide explains how glaciers and volcanoes have shaped this region. As a result, the journey itself becomes an important part of the experience.

Gígjökull Glacier Stop

One of the first major highlights is Gígjökull Glacier, an outlet glacier of Eyjafjallajökull. Here, visitors can clearly see the powerful effects of the 2010 volcanic eruption.

During that eruption, enormous floods of water, ice, and ash rushed down the mountain. Consequently, the landscape changed dramatically, and deep channels were carved through the valley below.

Today, the area offers a striking example of Iceland’s powerful natural forces.

Short Hike at Steinholt

From Gígjökull, the journey continues deeper into Þórsmörk valley. At Steinholt, the group stops for a short hike in the surrounding landscape.

Towering ridges rise above the valley while glacial rivers cut through the terrain below. Because of these dramatic surroundings, the location offers incredible photo opportunities.

Evening Arrival in Húsadalur

Later in the afternoon, the tour reaches Húsadalur, where the group stays overnight. This peaceful location sits in the heart of Þórsmörk and is surrounded by mountains.

In the evening, guests gather for a traditional mountain BBQ dinner. Afterwards, the valley becomes calm as most day visitors leave the area.

For many travelers, this quiet moment becomes one of the tour’s highlights.

Day 2 – Exploring Þórsmörk Valley

Breakfast in the Highlands

Morning begins with breakfast in the mountain hut. Afterwards, exploration of the valley continues with new views and hiking opportunities.

Unlike the surrounding glaciers, Þórsmörk is surprisingly green. Moss, ferns, and birch forests grow between volcanic ridges and glacier rivers.

Hiking Through the Nature Reserve

Several trails lead through the beautiful landscapes of Þórsmörk. Some routes climb toward viewpoints above the valley, while others follow paths through forested slopes.

Since the 1918 Katla eruption, large parts of the valley have been protected as a natural mountain reserve. Because of this protection, the landscape remains remarkably untouched.

Consequently, visitors can experience Icelandic nature in its purest form.

Scenic Return Along the South Coast

Later in the day, the journey begins back toward the south coast. Along the way, several scenic stops may be included depending on conditions.

For example, visitors may stop at Seljalandsfoss waterfall, one of Iceland’s most famous waterfalls. In addition, the nearby black sand beaches offer another dramatic landscape.

Finally, the tour concludes with a drop-off at your accommodation after two unforgettable days in the Highlands.
