Description

About the tour

Hidden Valley of Waterfalls, Vikings & Volcanoes

Discover one of Iceland’s most fascinating and underrated regions on this exclusive private Þjórsárdalur Super Jeep adventure. Located between glaciers, volcanoes, and lava fields, this dramatic valley tells the story of Iceland’s powerful natural forces and early Viking settlement.

As you travel through the valley, you will explore landscapes shaped by fire and ice. At the same time, your private guide will share stories about the area’s geology, history, and legends.

Because this is a fully private tour, you can explore the region at your own pace. In addition, your guide can adjust the itinerary throughout the day, allowing you to spend more time in the places that interest you most.

What Makes Þjórsárdalur Special

Þjórsárdalur sits between three volcano systems — Hekla, Tindfjallajökull, and the Hofsjökull glacier. As a result, it is one of the most geologically active regions in Iceland.

Over the centuries, volcanic eruptions shaped the valley, leaving lava fields, fertile farmland, and powerful rivers. Meanwhile, glacial floods carved deep canyons and dramatic landscapes across the area.

Today, therefore, Þjórsárdalur offers a rare combination of natural beauty and history. Not only can visitors experience spectacular scenery, but they can also explore stories from Iceland’s Viking past and medieval sagas.

Your Private Adventure

Travel in one of our custom-built Super Jeeps, designed to handle Iceland’s rugged terrain. At the same time, these vehicles provide comfort and safety as you travel into remote highland landscapes.

With your expert local guide, you can enjoy:

• A flexible itinerary and relaxed pace
• Time for photography and short scenic walks
• Insight into Icelandic history, geology, and folklore
• Access to remote highland landscapes that few visitors reach

Because this is a private experience, the day can be tailored to your interests. For example, you may wish to spend more time hiking, stop frequently for photography, or simply enjoy the scenery along the way. Ultimately, the tour is designed to create a personal and memorable experience in one of Iceland’s most unique valleys.

Highlights of the Tour

Hjálparfoss Waterfall

One of Iceland’s most unique waterfalls, Hjálparfoss features two streams that cascade symmetrically into a calm pool. Surrounded by striking basalt formations, the waterfall creates a beautifully balanced natural setting. As a result, it is one of the most photographed waterfalls in the Þjórsárdalur valley.

Háifoss – Iceland’s Third-Highest Waterfall

Standing at 122 meters, Háifoss drops dramatically into a vast canyon carved by glacial rivers. Nearby, you can also see Granni waterfall, which flows down the opposite side of the canyon. Together, these waterfalls create one of the most spectacular waterfall landscapes in Iceland.

Gjáin Valley

Hidden within the valley, Gjáin is a magical oasis filled with moss-covered lava formations, small waterfalls, and crystal-clear streams. In addition, volcanic caves and winding paths create an almost fairy-tale atmosphere. Because of its beauty, many Icelanders consider Gjáin one of the most enchanting hidden places in the country.

Þjóðveldisbærinn Stöng – Viking Age Farm Reconstruction

At Þjóðveldisbærinn Stöng, you can visit a beautifully reconstructed Viking longhouse. The building is based on archaeological findings from the original farm, which was buried during the eruption of Hekla in 1104. Today, therefore, the site offers a fascinating glimpse into Iceland’s early settlement history and the daily lives of the first Icelandic farmers.

Perfect For

  • Families and small groups

  • Travelers wanting to explore beyond the typical Golden Circle
  • Guests looking for a unique highland-style experience without a long drive
