From Hekla to Landmannalaugar

To begin the adventure, we drive toward the legendary Hekla volcano, often referred to as the “Gateway to Hell.” From there, the journey continues through Dómadalur valley, which gradually leads us to the striking lakes Frostastaðavatn and Ljótipollur.

Shortly afterwards, we arrive at one of the most picturesque stops of the tour: Landmannalaugar. This remarkable area is known for its colourful rhyolite mountains and fascinating geothermal activity. Furthermore, it is surrounded by dramatic black lava fields and features a natural geothermal bathing pool.

Driving the Laugavegur Highlands

After enjoying a good stop in Landmannalaugar, we continue the journey along parts of the famous Laugavegur trail. The route then takes us through Reykjadalur valley, an area well known for its geothermal landscape.

As we continue south, the glaciers Mýrdalsjökull and Eyjafjallajökull gradually come into view in the distance, creating a truly unforgettable scene. Soon after, as we approach Emstrur, the scenery changes once again, with vast ice caps dominating the horizon and offering excellent panoramic photo opportunities.

Final Views over Þórsmörk

Finally, as the journey draws to a close, we stop near the western side of Markarfljótsgljúfur Canyon. From here, you can enjoy spectacular views of Eyjafjallajökull and the beautiful Þórsmörk valley, providing the perfect conclusion to a day exploring the Laugavegur – Fjallabak highlands.

Note: The F-roads used during this tour take us directly through sections of the Laugavegur trail and, at times, a few miles away from it.
