About the tour
A Premium Winter Adventure into Iceland’s Wild Heart
Journey beyond the ordinary on a three-day winter expedition through Þórsmörk, Iceland’s South Coast and the ever-changing Katla Ice Cave.
Traveling in a small group with an experienced local guide, you’ll reach landscapes no standard vehicle can touch. Because glaciers, rivers and volcanic forces have shaped this terrain, you’ll venture deep into the heart of it, far beyond where ordinary tours can go.
Along the way, there’s hearty Icelandic food, winter hikes through wild valleys, a Viking-inspired evening, and hot tubs beneath the night sky. In addition, thundering waterfalls, black-sand beaches, and one of Iceland’s most extraordinary ice caves round out the journey.
Altogether, this is remote wilderness paired with real comfort. Since the group never exceeds 12 guests, there’s room to explore at a relaxed pace, and your guide adapts each day to weather, road conditions and the best experiences on offer.
From Þórsmörk’s Hidden Valleys to the Ice Caves of Katla
The adventure begins in Reykjavík, heading east toward Þórsmörk — a spectacular nature reserve fenced in by glaciers and crossed by unbridged rivers. Because of this terrain, only a capable Super Jeep or 4×4 can carry you in.
Over three days, scenic driving meets accessible guided walks and memorable Icelandic meals. For instance, night one unfolds at Húsadalur, deep in Þórsmörk, in a private room with shared bathroom facilities nearby.
Afterward, the journey continues to Hvolsvöllur for a Viking feast and axe-throwing, followed by hot tubs and sauna at Ásgarður, where you settle into your own private room for the night.
Finally, the last day brings together the best of the South Coast and a guided descent into the Katla Ice Cave. Along the route, Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss and Reynisfjara feature prominently, while your guide adds lesser-known stops chosen for the season. Furthermore, on clear nights with favorable aurora activity, there’s a genuine chance to spot the Northern Lights — though, of course, as with any natural phenomenon, sightings can never be guaranteed.

Day 1 – Þórsmörk
Departure & Journey to Þórsmörk
Meet your guide at Bus Stop #5 – Harpa in Reykjavík by 08:50, ready for a 09:00 departure. Alternatively, guests staying along the route in Selfoss, Hella or Hvolsvöllur may arrange pickup at selected accommodation, provided this is confirmed in advance.
Into the Þórsmörk Wilderness by Super Jeep
Once the group leaves the main road, the landscape grows steadily wilder on the journey toward Þórsmörk. Because winter conditions can shift quickly, your guide selects the most rewarding route and stops each day, adapting to road and river conditions as needed. Overall, the 4×4 Super Jeep drive is combined with short guided walks, giving guests time to take in the valley’s dramatic mountains and glacier views.
Meals & Accommodation in Þórsmörk
Throughout the day, a prepared lunch box keeps the group fuelled, followed by a traditional Icelandic lamb dinner in the evening. Afterward, guests spend the night in a private room at Húsadalur, with shared bathroom facilities.
Day 2 – Explore
Exploring Þórsmörk on Foot & by Vehicle
After breakfast, the group continues exploring Þórsmörk, alternating between short hikes and rides in a vehicle. Again, the day’s route depends on snow, weather and trail conditions, ensuring the safest and most scenic path through the valley. Eventually, guests warm up with a bowl of traditional Icelandic meat soup for lunch before leaving Þórsmörk in the afternoon.
Viking Evening at Valhalla
Later, on arrival in Hvolsvöllur, the group enjoys a Viking-inspired evening at Valhalla, featuring a hearty Viking steak dinner. In addition, the evening includes axe throwing, giving guests a hands-on taste of Viking culture in a fun, relaxed setting.
Relaxation & Overnight at Ásgarður
Following the feast, guests unwind in the hot tubs and sauna at Ásgarður before settling into a private room for the night.
Day 3 – South Coasat
South Coast & Katla Ice Cave
After breakfast, the group heads out to explore Iceland’s South Coast. Highlights typically include Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss and Reynisfjara black-sand beach, while your guide adds further stops along the way.
Katla Ice Cave Adventure
Next, in Vík, the group joins a guided adventure to the Katla Ice Cave, travelling toward Kötlujökull, an outlet glacier of Mýrdalsjökull. Since the cave changes continuously, a qualified guide leads the way through natural ice formations that make every visit unique. Whenever conditions require it, helmets and crampons are supplied.
Final Meal & Return to Reykjavík
Finally, the day includes a selected meal at Smiðjan Brugghús before the group makes its way back to Reykjavík, arriving at approximately 19:30.
